As healthcare costs continue to rise, organizations are looking for opportunities to identify health risks earlier, improve employee outcomes, and reduce the long-term burden of chronic conditions.

Health screenings play a central role in this effort by serving as an early-risk intelligence strategy, giving employers a clearer view of emerging health risks before they become more complex and costly.

Turning screening data into actionable insights

Biometric screenings provide real-time data on key health indicators such as blood pressure, cholesterol, and glucose. Unlike claims data, which reflects past healthcare utilization, screening results offer a forward-looking view of emerging risk.

When used strategically, this data can help organizations:

Identify at-risk individuals earlier

Detect gaps in preventive care and chronic condition management

Inform targeted engagement strategies

This positions screenings not as a standalone wellness activity, but as a strategic data asset that helps organizations move from observing health trends to intervening earlier.

Participation starts with access

The ability to identify and address population health risks depends on meaningful participation. Employers that achieve higher engagement typically provide several screening options designed to meet the needs of a diverse workforce.

Onsite screenings offer convenience and visibility, while lab vouchers, physician forms, and at-home screening kits extend access to remote and distributed employees. Offering this flexibility makes it easier for people to participate across different roles, locations, and schedules.

Broader participation also leads to more representative data, giving employers a clearer understanding of workforce health risks and helping them develop more effective interventions.

Moving from results to action

Awareness alone does not lead to behavior change. Without structured follow-up, many individuals who receive an elevated or out-of-range result may not understand its significance or take the next step.

Leading organizations are addressing this gap by integrating screenings with proactive outreach, health coaching, and personalized support. Screening results can serve as a trigger for timely intervention, helping connect employees with appropriate resources and encouraging them to take a more active role in their health.

This shift from passive reporting to active engagement is what enables screenings to drive meaningful outcomes.

What the data show

When screenings are embedded within a broader engagement strategy, the impact is measurable. Recent Health Advocate program data across employer populations shows:

86 percent participation, demonstrating strong reach when screening options are convenient and accessible

64 percent repeat participation, indicating sustained engagement over time

Approximately 50 percent of screened employees with at least one out-of-range result

22 percent of employees reported learning of a new health risk during their screening

The prevalence of undetected risk reinforces the value of screenings as an opportunity for earlier intervention.

Repeat participation is particularly important. When individuals return for screenings over time, it reflects growing trust in the program and creates the conditions needed to track changes and support continued improvement.

Among repeat participants, meaningful changes in health risk have been observed:

29 percent improvement in blood pressure risk

46 percent of high-risk individuals improving to normal or borderline levels

43 percent of high-risk diabetes participants improving their risk status

These results demonstrate that screenings, when paired with follow-up support, can contribute to lasting improvements in individual and population health.

Reducing risk before costs escalate

For employers, brokers, and consultants, the value of health screenings extends beyond the screening event itself. Their greater strategic value lies in the ability to identify and influence health risks before they contribute to more serious conditions and higher healthcare utilization.

Reducing risk factors such as hypertension and elevated glucose can help lower the likelihood of future complications and the need for high-cost services. Although the financial impact of preventive efforts develops over time, improving population risk profiles can contribute to more stable and sustainable healthcare costs.

Accessible screening options can support lower overall population risk, slow the progression of chronic conditions, and encourage more effective use of healthcare resources.

Screenings work best as part of a broader strategy

Health screenings are most effective when they are part of a continuous, connected approach to employee health.

Integrating screening data with proactive outreach, coaching, navigation, and other personalized resources helps ensure that insights lead to meaningful action. It also gives employees a clear next step, rather than leaving them to interpret and act on their results alone.

This approach transforms screenings from a point-in-time event into an ongoing mechanism for improving population health.

Making prevention part of the strategy

As healthcare strategies continue to evolve, health screenings are becoming an increasingly important tool for early identification and intervention.

For employers and their advisors, the opportunity is not simply to measure employee health. It is to use screening insights to engage people earlier, connect them with appropriate support, and improve health outcomes over time.

When access, data, and follow-up support work together, health screenings become more than a preventive service. They become a practical lever for improving health outcomes, reducing future risk, and building a more sustainable population health strategy.

By Brittney Willoughby, MSN-PH, RNHealth Advocate Employers and their advisors are increasingly shifting from reactive cost management to proactive risk reduction.
