Shopping around for an MRI

“Shopping around for care was easier than I thought.”

With breast cancer common in her family, Nancy was told she needed a breast MRI after receiving irregular results on her annual mammogram. In the past, she would have gone straight to the local teaching hospital in her neighborhood for the procedure.

Now, concerned about her out-of-pocket costs and knowing there are multiple in-network facilities where she could go, Nancy logged on to Health Advocate’s Health Cost Estimator+ pricing tool.

With a quick search, Nancy learned she could save over $500 out of pocket by traveling a few miles to another, smaller hospital that appeared to be in her health plan’s network. After confirming with Health Advocate that the hospital was in her plan’s network and reviewing its quality scores, Nancy scheduled the procedure.
