Employer dealing with an impaired employee

A hospital administrator contacted Health Advocate for help with a nurse suspected of being impaired and not providing quality care to patients.

Solution:    

The Health Advocate team:

  • Coached the Nurse Manager and HR on how to intervene immediately, and successfully removed the nurse from patient care until she could be further evaluated
  • Worked within the hospital’s policies and protocols to partner with the Nurse Manager and HR to encourage the nurse to accept help from their Employee Assistance Program
  • Determined that the nurse was experiencing sleeping problems due to difficulties with her troubled teenager
  • Helped set up counseling sessions for the nurse and her son, to create an action plan to help change his disruptive behavior
